Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari identified lane indiscipline as the leading cause of road accidents in India, revealing that even his vehicle was fined twice in Mumbai for traffic violations. Speaking during the Question Hour in the Lok Sabha, Gadkari emphasised that while high-speed driving is common globally, India's critical issue lies in poor adherence to lane discipline.
The minister called for extensive education on traffic discipline, particularly targeting youth and children, to foster greater awareness of road safety. Highlighting the government’s efforts, he mentioned the installation of CCTV cameras to monitor and penalise traffic rule violations.
Appealing to lawmakers, Gadkari urged them to organise traffic sensitisation programs in their constituencies to address this growing concern. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla echoed the sentiment, stressing that members of Parliament share the responsibility of educating citizens about traffic regulations to reduce road accidents.
