The State Highways (SH) Department has launched a Rs 10.4 million project aimed at improving traffic flow at Lotus Tank Junction and Fortune Pandiyan Hotel Junction along Alagar Kovil Main Road. The project involves road widening and the introduction of roundabouts to ease congestion at these heavily trafficked intersections. The existing road, which is 60 feet wide, will be expanded to 70-80 feet as part of the upgrades.
The construction is expected to be completed within three to four months. However, similar plans for Arasaradi Junction have been delayed due to land acquisition challenges. While many commuters welcome the proposed improvements, there are differing opinions on the approach. Some suggest that simply replacing the traffic signals with roundabouts could be sufficient to alleviate congestion, without the need for widening the road.
