According to officials from the Trichy corporation, the link road will span 9.8 km, starting from the right bank of the Koraiyar river near the IBT and ending at the right bank of the Kudamurutti river near the police checkpost on the Trichy-Karur national highway. The entire road has been divided into three sections: I, II, and III.
The local body recently received 810.7 million for the construction of Section I, which will cover the stretch between Panjapur and Karumandapam. The funds include both loans and grants under the Sustainable Municipal Infrastructure Finance – Tamil Nadu (SMIF-TN) initiative.
Section I will feature elevated roads for 1.3 km, and a rail overbridge will span 640 meters near Gandhi Nagar. Retaining walls along the river bund will be developed for a length of 2.2 km. The section will also have a 1.2 km footpath and a 1 km-long closed stormwater drain.
A senior official stated that the link road will have two lanes, and funds for Sections I and II have already been secured from various schemes. Funds for Section III, the longest stretch between Karumandapam and Woraiyur, will be obtained soon.
The entire project is estimated to cost around Rs 3.67 billion. Since Section III is expected to require land acquisition, additional funds may be necessary for compensation. While the Trichy corporation initially proposed landscaping and beautification as part of the project, these components have been removed by the state government to reduce the overall cost.
Officials mentioned that elevated stretches with approach roads would be constructed at intersections on the Trichy-Dindigul NH, Vayalur Road, and near the Kuzhumayee Amman temple behind the district collector's office. Work on the project may be inaugurated by Chief Minister M K Stalin during his visit to Trichy in the coming months.
