The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is accelerating work on the strategically important Aalo-Mechukha road in Arunachal Pradesh, with the double-laning of the 32-km Pene–Tato stretch expected to be completed by March 2026. The project, vital for civilian movement and defence logistics, will enhance connectivity to remote border districts.
Chief Engineer of Project Brahmank, S.C. Looniya, confirmed that while the Pene–Tato stretch has faced delays due to land acquisition, efforts are underway to speed up formation cutting to ensure safe and reliable travel. “We want to complete the formation-cutting immediately, so commuters don’t face problems like road closures due to equipment movement. The stretch will be completed with all parameters, ensuring safe, secure, and satisfactory road connectivity,” he said.
BRO’s immediate target is to provide all-weather connectivity from Kaying in Siang district to Tato in Shi-Yomi district. Looniya added that work is also progressing on the Tato–Mechukha stretch, where 14 bridges have been awarded to contractors and are in various stages of construction.
Additional projects include:
- Yarlung–Trijunction road (12 km): Work has begun, including a 140-ft steel modular bridge, scheduled for completion in two years.
- Yarlung–Lamang road (16 km): Already completed.
- Lamang–Lola road (14 km): Detailed Project Report (DPR) under preparation.
On the Migging–Tuting road, only 15 km of formation cutting remains. Surfacing is planned this year, with completion targeted by March 2026, weather permitting.
Looniya also said the BRO is willing to take up maintenance of the NH 13 Akajan–Likabali–Bam road if approved by the government. This route, originally built by the BRO in the 1960s and handed over to NHIDCL in 2015, is in poor condition and has triggered resentment among locals. Improved upkeep would benefit movement of BRO personnel in Upper Subansiri, West Siang, Upper Siang, and Shi-Yomi districts.
Project Brahmank, under the BRO, is headquartered in Pasighat, East Siang, and is tasked with developing critical road infrastructure across Arunachal Pradesh’s border areas.
