Motorists along Coimbatore’s busy Avinashi Road are set for relief as the State Highways Department completes the main carriageway works of the long-awaited Avinashi Road elevated flyover project.
Officials confirmed there will be no trial run, citing the bridge’s proven strength with heavy vehicles already transporting construction materials. The Special Projects Wing highlighted that deck works near Hopes Junction—executed above live railway tracks and high-tension electric lines—are now complete, marking a key milestone in the Rs 16.21 billion project. Bituminous road laying across the 10.1 km stretch is also finished, with focus shifting to final road furnishings such as markings, streetlights, speed-sensing cameras, and traffic signage.
Launched in December 2020, the four-lane elevated corridor spans 17.25 metres in width, supported by 10.5-metre service roads on both sides, and includes stormwater drains and pedestrian footpaths. The flyover features entry and exit ramps at eight locations in both directions, with four already complete and three others progressing rapidly. One ramp near PRS Grounds has been delayed due to ongoing litigation.
A senior Special Projects Wing official told TNIE, “Deck works at Hopes Junction are complete, and bituminous works are finished along the entire stretch. Three ramps will be completed within 20 days, while one near Residency Hotel is held up due to court proceedings. The flyover remains on track for completion by the end of this month.”
Once fully ready, the Tamil Nadu government will set the inauguration date. As heavy-duty trucks are already using the bridge, no separate trial run is planned.
Upon completion, the Avinashi Road corridor will become Tamil Nadu’s longest flyover and a pioneering project in sustainable infrastructure. Rainwater harvesting systems, 200 ft deep borewells, and drip irrigation between pillars have been installed to support greenery, reflecting an environmentally conscious design.
Commuters can expect the facility to open in October, providing significant relief from chronic traffic congestion along this arterial route.
