Project Vijayak of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) celebrated its 15th Raising Day at Kargil, Ladakh, on 21 September 2025, marking a milestone in infrastructure development worth over Rs 1.2 billion as it enters its 16th year. Over the past 15 years, the project has constructed and maintained more than 1,400 km of roads and 80 major bridges across Ladakh, including the record reopening of the strategic Zojila Pass within just 31 days of its winter closure in April 2025—an unprecedented achievement in high-altitude connectivity.
Established in 2010, Project Vijayak was tasked with linking Ladakh’s remote valleys and forward areas to the national mainstream while meeting the operational requirements of the Armed Forces. Its efforts have enhanced operational preparedness and significantly improved connectivity and livelihoods for local communities.
The 15th Raising Day celebrations combined tradition and pride, featuring a Sainik Sammelan, cultural programmes, prayers at Mandir and Gurudwara, and the inauguration of the Vijayak Memorial honouring fallen heroes. Community events included a bike rally to the Drass War Memorial, painting competitions on Ladakhi culture, and gatherings such as the Pagal Gymkhana and Barakhana, bringing together troops, families, and locals in unity.
Project Vijayak has prioritised the welfare of its Casual Paid Labourers, introducing insulated shelters, improved sanitation, protective gear, winter clothing, and regular health camps to ensure safety and well-being.
Looking ahead, the Rs 1.2 billion plan includes widening key roads, constructing new tunnels and bridges, and adopting advanced technologies such as geotextiles, slope stabilisation, digital monitoring, and eco-friendly construction practices. These initiatives aim to further strengthen resilience, sustainability, and high-altitude connectivity.
Entering its 16th year, Project Vijayak continues to be a lifeline for the Armed Forces and local communities, embodying BRO’s commitment to forging connectivity in India’s toughest terrains.
