India’s indigenous navigation platform, Mappls by MapmyIndia, has unveiled a suite of first-in-India smart mobility features aimed at making driving safer, smoother and more economical. The new tools include AI-powered live traffic signal timers, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) annual toll pass savings, and toll road distance tracking.

Developed in collaboration with the Bengaluru Traffic Police, the NHAI and Arcadis, the features are designed to help commuters plan their journeys better, save on toll charges and promote responsible driving habits.

Rakesh Verma, Co-Founder and Managing Director of MapmyIndia, said the initiative supports the company’s goal of creating a “smarter mobility ecosystem” for Indian commuters. “These innovations will not only help save time, money and stress but also lay the foundation for a safer and more connected India,” he added.

As part of a pilot with the Bengaluru Traffic Police and Arcadis, over 125 smart signals have been integrated into the Mappls app. Users can now view real-time traffic signal countdowns up to 500 metres in advance, displaying green, amber and red light durations.

“This is a major leap for traffic management,” said Karthik Reddy (IPS), Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Bengaluru. “By showing live signal timers, commuters can plan better, reduce uncertainty and improve road discipline.” He noted that this initiative aligns with Bengaluru’s wider goal of building smarter, safer traffic systems, with plans to extend the feature to other cities soon.

In partnership with the NHAI, Mappls has also introduced a feature showing potential toll savings for users purchasing the NHAI Annual Toll Pass. Travellers can now view expected savings before starting a trip.

A.R. Chitranshi, Chief Operating Officer of IHMCL (NHAI’s technology arm), said the collaboration makes highway travel “more transparent and cost-effective.”

Additionally, Mappls now provides exact kilometre-wise tracking for each toll road, giving drivers greater clarity on toll usage and costs—helping improve both travel budgeting and accountability.
