The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has finally moved forward with its long-delayed pay-and-park scheme, issuing tenders on Thursday for six major city roads. The project will cover Jangli Maharaj Road–Gokhale Road, Fergusson College Road, Laxmi Road, Balewadi High Street, Viman Nagar Road and Bibwewadi Main Road, together offering space for 6,344 two-wheelers and 618 four-wheelers. The civic body expects to earn around Rs 120 million from the initiative.

First approved in 2018, the parking policy remained stalled for seven years. Unregulated roadside parking worsened congestion on busy commercial stretches, with shopkeepers often leaving vehicles parked for hours and double-parking adding to the chaos. Traffic police repeatedly pushed for a structured, payable parking system.

A senior PMC projects-department official said the new system would ease traffic flow and curb long-duration roadside parking. With nearly seven million vehicles now registered in the city, parking pressures have surged. Officials noted that undisciplined parking and abandoned vehicles have intensified confusion, making a regulated system essential. More locations may be added in future phases.

PMC has fixed charges at Rs 4 per hour for two-wheelers and Rs 20 per hour for four-wheelers, applicable for 14 hours daily. Contractors will be responsible for all manpower and equipment costs from the collected revenue. Separate tender conditions are being prepared.
