Mein raised the issue during a meeting with Ashish Gupta, Executive Director of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited. He said the highway would play a critical role in improving access, boosting tourism and supporting socio-economic growth in eastern Arunachal Pradesh.
“The timely completion of this highway is crucial for improving connectivity and enabling smoother movement for pilgrims and tourists visiting the sacred Parshuram Kund, besides strengthening development in the region,” Mein said in a social media post after the meeting.
Highlighting the wider economic impact, he said the project would not only ease travel but also open up new opportunities for trade, tourism and local businesses. He urged all agencies involved to make concerted efforts to fast-track construction.
The Chongkham–Brahmakund stretch, part of National Highway 15, is around 61.15 km long and connects the districts of Namsai, Lohit and Anjaw. The project was sanctioned by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and awarded to NHIDCL as part of efforts to improve connectivity in remote and border areas.
The highway forms part of a broader Rs 440 billion national highway expansion package approved for Arunachal Pradesh, which includes three major corridors aimed at improving access and stimulating economic activity across the north-east. Within this package, the two-lane Brahmakund–Chongkham project is estimated to cost about Rs 9.15 billion.
During the meeting, Mein drew attention to the poor condition of the existing road and called on NHIDCL to expedite both maintenance and construction work to ensure uninterrupted travel for local residents and visitors. NHIDCL officials assured him that preparatory steps would be taken swiftly and coordination with field agencies strengthened to commence construction at the earliest.
