Announcing the decision in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said the 143-km stretch would be widened at an estimated cost of Rs 40 billion. The project aims to address long-standing congestion issues and rising traffic volumes on the corridor.
At present, the Khagaria–Purnea road is a two-lane highway despite heavy movement of buses, private vehicles and freight traffic. Commuters travelling via Begusarai and Khagaria frequently face traffic jams and delays. The matter was raised in Parliament by MP Rajesh Verma, who sought clarity on plans to upgrade the road to meet growing transport demand.
Responding to the query, Gadkari said the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has cleared the proposal and that the entire stretch will be developed as a four-lane highway. He said the expansion would enhance road safety, reduce travel time and support trade and economic activity across the region.
The minister added that final Cabinet approval is expected within the next 10 to 15 days, following which tenders will be awarded. Construction work is likely to begin within one and a half months. Once completed, the project is expected to provide sustained relief to commuters and strengthen Bihar’s road infrastructure network.
