The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has decided to upgrade the road stretch between Subhash Chowk and Bakhtawar Chowk into a model and green road, officials said. The project will be developed as a pilot initiative, with the learnings used to improve other roads across Gurugram on similar lines.
GMDA chief executive officer PC Meena has directed that the stretch be taken up as a demonstration project in line with the authority’s guidelines for model roads. The initiative aims to enhance road safety, pedestrian comfort, drainage efficiency, and the overall urban environment along the busy corridor.
According to officials, the upgrade will include the installation of road safety equipment, construction and repair of pedestrian footpaths, and improvement of drainage systems to prevent waterlogging during the monsoon. Green spaces will be developed on both sides of the road to improve aesthetics and provide a more people-friendly streetscape.
GMDA additional chief executive officer Vishwajit Chaudhary has instructed the authority’s Infra-1 branch to prepare a detailed estimate for repairing footpaths and the central verge along the Subhash Chowk–Bakhtawar Chowk stretch. The road makeover will also feature lane markings, zebra crossings, information boards, and improved intersections to ensure smoother traffic flow and safer crossings for pedestrians.
The Infra-2 branch has been directed to clean stormwater drains, install covers, and strengthen rainwater drainage arrangements along the corridor. In parallel, the environment branch has been asked to develop green belts along the road, with ornamental trees and plants planted in a park-like setting that will include benches for public use.
The mobility branch will focus on improving traffic management by repairing traffic signals and upgrading related systems. “The main road from Subhash Chowk to Bakhtawar Chowk will be upgraded into a model road. After transforming this stretch, more roads in Millennium City will be developed on similar lines,” Vishwajit Chaudhary, additional chief executive officer, GMDA, said.
