The Uttar Pradesh government has approved a Rs 540-million pedestrian bridge project across the Gomti River in Lucknow, aimed at enhancing pedestrian connectivity while creating a new public and cultural landmark along the riverfront. The project is expected to be completed within 18 months, according to Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) vice chairman Prathamesh Kumar.
The government has already released the first instalment of Rs 180.90 million for the project, paving the way for construction activities. The proposed pedestrian bridge will be built near the ADCP office in Gomti Nagar and will connect both sides of the Gomti riverfront, an area that attracts large numbers of visitors for recreation, fitness, and social gatherings.
According to LDA officials, the bridge has been designed to improve the overall riverfront experience by offering safe and convenient pedestrian movement along with scenic views of the river. Prathamesh Kumar, vice chairman, Lucknow Development Authority, said the bridge would serve multiple purposes beyond connectivity. “This bridge is designed for people. It will offer safe pedestrian movement, scenic river views, and a unique identity that reflects the spirit of Lucknow,” he said.
To ensure architectural quality, the LDA organised a national-level design competition that drew entries from around 25 architects from across the country. After evaluation by a jury panel, the design submitted by Mumbai-based RVAmp Studio was selected, and construction will proceed in line with the approved plan.
The bridge will be 12 metres wide, ensuring comfortable movement for pedestrians, including families and senior citizens. While the main bridge span will be 180 metres, the total length, including access ramps and platforms, will extend to about 380 metres. The structure will use steel tubular sections, with plate girders placed at heights of 30 and 40 metres to provide elevated viewing points of the Gomti River.
The deck will feature stamped concrete, GRC, and ACP panels, while tensile roofing will offer shade. The bridge will also be fitted with streetlights, bollard lights, and floor lighting to enhance safety and aesthetics during night hours. Officials said the project is expected to act as a catalyst for increased public activity along the riverfront.
