In a major relief for coastal Karnataka, the Centre has approved the preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for key highway infrastructure projects in Dakshina Kannada, including the long-pending Mangaluru Bypass and service roads along National Highway-66 from Talapady to Kundapur. The move is expected to significantly improve road safety, traffic flow and regional connectivity.
The decision follows sustained efforts by Dakshina Kannada Member of Parliament Capt. Brijesh Chowta, who has been actively pursuing the matter since assuming office. The proposed projects are aimed at decongesting critical arterial roads that serve as vital links for passenger movement, port-related cargo traffic and local commerce in the region.
The Surathkal–BC Road stretch, a major entry point into Mangaluru city, has long faced severe traffic bottlenecks due to inadequate carriageway width and the absence of service roads. Similarly, the lack of service roads along stretches of NH-66 has created safety concerns for local residents, pedestrians and commuters accessing adjoining habitations and commercial areas.
Capt. Chowta raised the issue with senior officials of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways during the 2024 Monsoon Session of Parliament. He also highlighted the urgency of the projects at a DISHA committee meeting held in Mangaluru and subsequently submitted written representations to officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), seeking time-bound action.
Under the DPR preparation process, consultants will examine multiple technical and planning aspects, including highway alignment, provision of grade-separated junctions, incorporation of road safety measures and long-term traffic management requirements. Notices have already been issued to consultants to initiate the DPR work.
Welcoming the approval, Capt. Chowta termed it a milestone in addressing a long-standing demand of coastal Karnataka residents. He said the projects would strengthen port-led development, improve commuter safety and align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of building a self-reliant and developed India.
