The Delhi government launched a Rs 640.04-million project to overhaul the Nangloi–Najafgarh road in a bid to reduce traffic congestion and improve commuting conditions in West Delhi. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Lieutenant-Governor VK Saxena laid the foundation stone for the project, which focuses on comprehensive road strengthening and drainage upgrades along the busy corridor.
Under the project, new stormwater drains will be constructed and existing drains will be upgraded to address chronic waterlogging issues that have long affected the stretch. The initiative is expected to significantly improve road conditions and ensure smoother traffic flow, particularly during the monsoon season.
Saxena said he had inspected several areas in September 2024, including Mundka, Nangloi, Kanjhawala, Phirni Road and Rohtak Road, and found the infrastructure in an “extremely dilapidated” state. He noted that sewage water was flowing onto roads, surfaces were badly damaged, and commuters faced severe inconvenience due to potholes and unhygienic conditions. He added that corrective measures had been delayed earlier due to neglect, but the current project would address these long-standing issues.
Chief Minister Gupta said the Delhi government is adopting modern and scientific approaches to improve the Capital’s drainage and stormwater management systems. She said the project would strengthen and reconstruct the road, install crash barriers along the central verge, and ensure effective drainage even during heavy rainfall.
Highlighting the broader strategy, Gupta said regular drain cleaning, construction of new trunk drains and sewage treatment plant projects are being undertaken simultaneously. “Our aim is to ensure that only treated water flows into the Yamuna and that Delhi is permanently freed from waterlogging,” she said.
Public Works Department Minister Pravesh Sahib Singh said several roads in the area had remained in poor condition for years, and the present government had taken responsibility for their reconstruction by completing the tendering process and initiating work. Transport Minister Pankaj Singh added that the project would bring long-awaited relief to pedestrians and motorists who have faced severe difficulties, especially during the monsoon.
