According to airport sources, the National Highways Authority of India has begun construction of a major interchange at Savaravalli to link NH-16 directly with the Bhogapuram airport. This key road connection is expected to be ready by May–June. As part of its master plan, the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Development Authority has identified 15 major roads for development, of which seven strategic routes have been prioritised to strengthen airport access.
The plan includes diverting traffic from congested city highways to alternative corridors such as Beach Road and the Anakapalle–Anandapuram Highway, ensuring smoother and faster travel for airport-bound passengers. VMRDA chairman Pranav Gopal said all seven priority roads, with a combined cost of Rs 1.75 billion, are scheduled for completion by May this year.
In addition, other critical stretches, including Gambheeram Road and Divis Road, are under development and are expected to be completed by June. Several of these routes will be integrated with NH service roads, with new access points planned on the main carriageway to facilitate easier movement.
To further enhance regional connectivity, the state government has directed the National Highways Authority of India to plan a six-lane coastal highway linking the Visakhapatnam Port with NH-16 near Bhogapuram. This corridor is expected to provide motorists with direct access to the airport. At present, a four-lane divided Beach Road connects Visakhapatnam to the outskirts of Bheemili.
The government is also planning a Metro-cum-double-decker flyover along one of the city’s most congested highways. Inspired by the Nagpur model, the proposed structure will feature a Metro rail line on the upper deck and a four-lane elevated roadway on the lower deck, aimed at easing urban traffic while improving mass transit options.
