Pune Collector Jitendra Dudi said the successful hosting of the elite cycling event has encouraged authorities to make it an annual fixture. He noted that contractors will remain responsible for maintaining the upgraded roads even after the race, while additional stretches planned for the expanded route will also be kept in good condition.
According to Dudi, the prospect of the race returning every year is expected to ensure sustained maintenance standards across the network. He added that the rapid upgrade of previously neglected rural roads has surprised many residents, highlighting the event’s broader infrastructure impact.
Officials said the Pune Grand Tour, inspired by iconic global races such as the Tour de France, aims to combine competitive cycling with scenic landscapes, cleaner villages and improved rural connectivity. The initiative is expected to enhance the region’s visibility while promoting tourism and sustainable transport.
Public Works Department Superintending Engineer Bharatkumar Baviskar said the upgraded routes include state highways and rural roads developed to professional cycling standards. The improvement works involved widening carriageways, enhancing curves and gradients, strengthening shoulders, installing safety barriers in ghat sections and ensuring uniform surfacing using full-width paving technology.
The expansion of the Pune Grand Tour is expected to strengthen Pune’s position as a hub for international cycling events while driving long-term benefits for rural infrastructure and regional development.
