Makronia Chowk connects routes towards Kanpur, Jabalpur, Nagpur and Jhansi and affects traffic to surrounding cities. The junction carries heavy vehicles, commercial traffic and local movement and has been prone to congestion. Connectivity to National Highway 44 increases through traffic and intensifies pressure on the local road network.
The proposed flyover will be approximately two point two km long and the plan includes a separate DPR for four-laning from Makronia to Baheria at an estimated cost of Rs 150 million (mn). The current route is mainly two lanes and heavy vehicle movement has often slowed traffic, reducing throughput and creating delays in the city. The design aims to accelerate highway movement and redistribute heavy vehicle pressure away from inner urban stretches.
The project received in-principle approval in 2002 but stalled earlier owing to opposition from local traders. The local representative has said continuous efforts helped secure the present approval to prepare the DPR, which will cover both the flyover and the four-lane road. Construction has not begun and the process awaits DPR completion and subsequent administrative and financial clearances.
Traffic planners caution that the flyover alone will not resolve congestion and that effective implementation will require service roads, careful entry and exit management, local market traffic controls and signal synchronisation. The quality of the DPR and the manner of its execution are therefore critical for long-term relief. The tender approval for the DPR is an initial but necessary step towards structural change in the city’s traffic management and the area has become a notable node on the state infrastructure map.
