The Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society (ULCCS), one of India’s largest cooperative infrastructure organisations, recently completed three major infrastructure projects with a combined value of Rs 4.53 billion. The projects highlight the organisation’s capabilities across coastal protection engineering, complex bridge construction, and climate-resilient road infrastructure.
One project involved the construction of a 7.31-km coastal protection system designed to mitigate shoreline erosion and sea intrusion. The project included the placement of around 1,25,000 tetrapods and 8,50,000 tonnes of granite armour units, along with groyne structures to stabilise shoreline sediment movement. The project received the Outstanding Infrastructure Project 2023 recognition from the Indian Concrete Institute (ICI), Kochi Chapter.
ULCCS also completed South India’s longest over-backwater road bridge, spanning 1,755 metres and built largely over water using specialised marine construction methods. The bridge features 55-metre bow-string arch spans and multiple long spans to maintain inland waterway navigation while improving connectivity for island communities.
The third project involved a semi-elevated highway corridor designed to remain operational during seasonal flooding. By elevating critical sections above flood levels, the design ensures uninterrupted connectivity while supporting economic activity in flood-prone regions.
With over a century of experience and more than 7,500 projects executed, ULCCS continues to expand its role as a multi-sector infrastructure solutions provider across transportation, coastal engineering, and urban infrastructure in India.
