Madurai authorities have proposed a new bridge to ease persistent congestion on the South Gate–Villapuram overbridge, a crucial 300-metre link to Madurai airport. The State Highway Department has identified the location as a bottleneck and advanced a plan for a parallel span to run alongside the existing structure. The proposal is part of measures to improve traffic flow on this key urban corridor.

Project plans indicate the new bridge will extend from South Gate Junction to Jeyavilas while the existing route from Jeyavilas to Avaniyapuram Bypass will be widened into a four-lane corridor. Land acquisition for the scheme is expected to cost Rs 2,200 million (mn). The current overbridge, opened in 1989, routinely experiences severe congestion during peak periods and is cited as unsatisfactory for the volume of traffic. Highway engineers have assessed the structure and reported that the primary span remains sound other than the railing.

Local drivers and residents described daily difficulties caused by the chronic queues and slow movement across the bridge. A cab driver observed that the crossing is generally clear only before seven am and after 11 pm, adding that overtaking is hazardous and that it can take nearly 10 minutes to negotiate the span at busy times. A Villapuram share auto operator reported that heavy traffic is common between 10 am and 11:30 am and between seven pm and eight pm and that minor breakdowns frequently halt movement. One resident who drives for a living said he often uses a two-kilometre longer alternate route via Jaihindpuram to reach the railway junction.

Officials said the new parallel bridge can be built without demolishing the existing structure and that the scheme should materially reduce congestion while enhancing connectivity to the airport. They indicated that the combination of a parallel span and road widening would ease daily commutes and improve reliability for commercial and private traffic. Authorities acknowledged that festival periods intensify the problem, producing jams that can last one to two hours, and said the project would form part of broader traffic management efforts.
