The proposed highway is expected to improve regional connectivity and reduce travel time between the central and western parts of the State, while supporting economic activity along the corridor. The northern bypass is aimed at easing traffic congestion in and around Tiruchy and providing a faster transit option for vehicles bypassing the city. Planners will assess potential alignments to minimise land acquisition and environmental disruption while optimising construction costs.
The selected consultant will be responsible for conducting traffic studies, alignment planning, feasibility analysis, environmental and social impact assessments and detailed engineering design as part of the DPR preparation. The consultant will also carry out surveys and prepare cost estimates, implementation schedules and phased construction proposals. Recommendations on suitable project configurations and highway standards will form a key component of the report to enable effective decision making.
The Tiruchy–Karur greenfield segment had been raised in Parliament by the Tiruchy Member of Parliament, who drew attention to the need for expediting work on that stretch. The move to invite bids is intended to translate earlier proposals into actionable plans by producing a robust DPR that can be used for statutory clearances and funding decisions. Stakeholders will review the submitted proposals and the authority will award the consultancy to the bidder that demonstrates the required technical and financial capacity. The DPR is expected to guide subsequent tendering and implementation phases.
