The upgrade is designed to address sharp curves, geometric deficiencies and congestion in densely populated stretches of Barabanki and Bahraich districts and to improve road safety and fuel efficiency. The highway will feature access control and continuous service roads and will bypass major habitations to raise average travel speeds and reduce travel time to around one hour. Design measures are expected to mitigate accident risks and support more reliable passenger and freight movement.
The corridor will link to National Highways NH 27, NH 330B and NH 730 and to state highways SH 13 and SH 30B, enhancing multimodal integration with airports, railway stations and logistics hubs. The project explicitly targets improved access to the Rupaidiha Land Port near the India–Nepal border and is expected to serve as a primary trade and transit route between India and Nepal, facilitating faster movement of goods and passengers. Seamless connectivity is anticipated to strengthen cross?border commerce and supply chain efficiency.
Projected economic benefits include substantial employment generation estimated at 3.654 mn person?days direct and 4.304 mn person?days indirect, and support for agriculture, tourism and logistics in districts such as Bahraich and Shravasti. The highway will connect towns including Barabanki, Ramnagar, Jarwal, Kaisarganj and Bahraich while linking to Special Economic Zones and Mega Food Parks to stimulate local economies. Traffic volumes are forecast to exceed 28,000 passenger car units by FY 2027?28, indicating significant demand.
The clearance aligns with the government’s PM GatiShakti initiative to develop integrated and efficient infrastructure networks and is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening regional mobility and economic activity. Implementation timelines and contractor appointments will determine the pace at which anticipated benefits are realised.
