The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has issued a Letter of Award for the construction of a 15 km four-lane South–East Bypass for Azamgarh city in Uttar Pradesh. The contract has been awarded to M/s Kaluwala Construction Private Limited for an amount of Rs 3688.5 mn on an engineering, procurement and construction mode. The engineering, procurement and construction mode places primary responsibility for design, procurement and on-site execution with the contractor under a defined scope.

The bypass will commence near Rani-Ka-Sarai village and will terminate near the Purvanchal Expressway, forming an important link in the regional road network by creating a continuous ring road around Azamgarh. It is expected to improve regional traffic movement and reduce congestion within the city. The alignment is intended to divert through traffic away from central arteries and to shorten travel times for regional journeys.

The implementation includes the construction of one flyover, one rail over bridge (RoB), two interchanges, two vehicular underpasses (VUPs), eight light vehicular underpasses (LVUPs) and three minor bridges. It also comprises service roads of length 11.6 km and nine km on each side and a seven point five km long slip road to facilitate local circulation. The service roads and underpasses are designed to manage local traffic flows and to improve access to adjacent communities and agricultural areas.

Once completed the bypass will boost regional connectivity, lower logistics costs and support long-term economic growth while promoting safer and faster travel across the region. The project is expected to relieve urban traffic pressure and enhance efficiency for freight movements between Azamgarh and neighbouring areas. Stakeholders expect the scheme to enhance road safety standards and to reduce time in transit for commercial vehicles, thereby supporting more efficient supply chains.
