The National Highways Authority of India has awarded a contract to Kaluwala Construction Private Limited under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction mode for the construction of a four-lane, 15 kilometre South-East Bypass for Azamgarh. The project is valued at Rs 3,688.5 million (mn) and will be executed to improve regional connectivity and relieve traffic congestion within the city. The bypass forms part of a strategic plan to enhance linkages between local roads and the expressway network.

The alignment will begin near Rani-Ka-Sarai village and extend to the Purvanchal Expressway, creating a continuous ring road around Azamgarh that is expected to facilitate smoother traffic flow and reduce congestion in the urban core. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said the bypass will lower logistics costs and support safer and faster movement of goods and people across eastern Uttar Pradesh. Coordination with state and local authorities and relevant stakeholders is planned to manage land acquisition, utility relocation and environmental and social safeguards, and to minimise disruption to residents and businesses during construction and commissioning.

The scope of work includes one flyover, one railway overbridge, two interchanges, two vehicular underpasses and eight light vehicular underpasses, together with three minor bridges. Service roads measuring 11.6 kilometre and nine kilometre on either side and a seven point five kilometre slip road will be developed as part of the scheme. The project will also incorporate drainage, signage and safety features to ensure long term operational resilience.

Execution under the EPC model is intended to provide integrated delivery and stricter quality control, with the contractor responsible for design, procurement and construction. The award is expected to spur investment in local supply chains and improve access to markets, health and education services. Project implementation timelines were not specified but the development is presented as a priority for regional infrastructure enhancement.
