The plan calls for constructing two additional parallel bridges, each with two to three lanes, on either side of the existing six-lane structure, substantially enhancing traffic capacity and easing vehicular movement towards Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The under-construction six-lane cable-stayed bridge at Bhat Circle will directly connect to the Narmada bridge and, with service roads on both sides, the corridor is expected to operate effectively as a 12-lane route. Service roads are expected to distribute local traffic and reduce interruptions on the main carriageway.
The stretch currently handles around 0.15 million (mn) vehicles daily, placing significant pressure on infrastructure and prompting the upgrade. Frequent VIP movement further necessitates capacity enhancement. The Road Construction Department has estimated the project cost at Rs 373.3 mn, with two parallel bridges each approximately 1,000 metres long and 15 metres wide to be built alongside the existing span. The parallel spans have been designed to accommodate directional segregation and peak hour loads.
Authorities said the new cable-stayed bridge will connect seamlessly to the canal crossing while the proposed parallel bridges will operate independently with traffic segregated by direction to ensure smoother flow. Construction within the canal will use a specialised pontoon method, employing floating platforms to facilitate heavy-duty piling and provide robust foundations. Officials expect the technique to minimise disruption to canal flow and nearby areas during the works. The upgrade is expected to improve connectivity to the airport and reduce congestion along the busy corridor.
