The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has stated that the highway is being built with safety systems, flyovers, underpasses and rest areas to improve traveller comfort and reduce incidents. The corridor is intended to ease congestion and improve logistics efficiency for freight and passengers while supporting economic growth in the region. Grade separated interchanges will maintain uninterrupted movement and link with arterial roads. The route will intersect the Ganga Expressway and reduce travel delays.
NE-6 will commence at its junction with National Highway 27 (NH-27) near Shaheed Path in South Lucknow, incorporating 11 km of the existing NH-27. From there the alignment will pass through Bani, Kantha and Amarsas before terminating at a junction with NH-27 at km 71.3 near Azad Marg in Kanpur, from where it will connect to Udyog Path. The expressway will run parallel to NH-27 and will be approximately 85 km away from existing route.
Beyond connectivity the expressway is expected to benefit farmers, students, businesses and industries by improving access to markets, education, healthcare and employment opportunities and by reducing journey times for trade and commuting. Authorities consider the route a catalyst for regional development that will strengthen supply chains and broaden labour markets. The project was notified as NE-6 in the Gazette of India in December 2020 and groundwork occurred in March 2019 and on January 5 2022.
