The alignment has been planned in two phases, with the first linking Kharghar to CBD Belapur and the second extending from CBD Belapur to the Nerul water transport jetty. The corridor begins at Jalmarg in Sector 16, Kharghar, passes the PAY Housing Scheme near Kharghar railway station, moves on to Sector 15 in CBD Belapur and terminates near DPS Nerul. Portions of the route have been realigned inland to minimise impact on mangroves and the creek ecosystem.
The KCR will integrate with the Sion-Panvel Expressway and connect at the Nerul end to Palm Beach Road, improving access to Mumbai's eastern suburbs and coastal corridors. The road is expected to reduce travel time between Kharghar, CBD Belapur and Nerul to about 15 minutes, easing daily commutes and enhancing airport connectivity to NMIA. The corridor is also planned to link several residential developments and upcoming commercial hubs, including the International Corporate Park in Kharghar.
The contract has been awarded to J Kumar, while the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has started relocating electrical utilities that obstruct the alignment. Ground mobilisation was reported in March as utility moves proceeded and preliminary works advanced, with a targeted completion year of 2028. Authorities view the scheme as a significant addition to Navi Mumbai's road network that will support future urban growth and reduce pressure on existing routes.
