The upgraded corridor will address limited width, sharp curves and traffic pressure that have lengthened journeys and increased fuel use and accident risk on the existing route. The ministry said the new alignment would permanently remove major black spots such as Bherughat and Choral Ghat and significantly reduce travel time between Indore and Omkareshwar from two to three hours to around one hour. Special focus has been placed on modern drainage, crash barriers and road safety signage to improve resilience and reduce incident severity.
Environmental measures have been incorporated into the scheme through rainwater management systems and plantation activities for green belt development, the ministry added. The corridor is regarded as strategically important because Indore serves as the commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh, while Khandwa functions as a major transport and railway junction linking towns in southern Madhya Pradesh. The route also connects several religious and tourism destinations, including Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, Hanuwantiya Island and Dada Dhuniwale Darbar.
Local stakeholders are anticipated to benefit from reduced delays and lower transport losses when the four-lane upgrade is complete, easing daily movement for farmers and freight operators and facilitating smoother pilgrim movement during Simhastha 2028 between Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga and Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga. Residents recalled past incidents of buses toppling and traffic jams stretching up to 10 km, underscoring the safety rationale for the tunnels and related works.
