The project comprises four underpasses in Thrissur district at Nadathara, Marathakkara, Puthukkad and Potta Ashramam, and nine in Palakkad district at Aalamaram (Vice Park Junction), Malabar Hotel Junction, Kanjikode, Kuruttikkad, Puthussery, Chandranagar, Kannannur, Chithalippalam and Irattakkulam. NHAI indicated that the new underpasses will enable the removal of traffic signal systems at major junctions, which is expected to reduce vehicle waiting times and improve travel speed. Local authorities will coordinate on-site logistics and public communication during phased construction. The initiative also targets locations where congestion and accidents are frequently reported.
Preparatory work includes strengthening and widening parallel roads and arranging traffic diversions during construction to limit disruption for motorists. Required land acquisition has been completed at Kunjanampara in Marathakkara and at Nadathara Junction, allowing work to progress at those sites. Construction is already underway at 11 locations along NH 544 and a flyover at Koratty is progressing under a separate contract. Safety audits will be conducted at key stages of the work.
PSD Construction Company of Namakkal, Tamil Nadu, is executing several of the ongoing projects while Dhahiwali Build Tech Limited will undertake the newly awarded underpass works. Authorities expect the combined programme to streamline movement along the highway and enhance safety for vehicles crossing to local roads. Traffic management plans are being implemented to maintain connectivity during the construction period. Stakeholders will monitor progress and review timelines to ensure completion with minimal delay.
