The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) informed the district administration that the extent of damage will require repair and restoration work expected to take a few days, given the scale of debris and instability. Officials instructed immediate closure of the road from Laitlyngkot village onwards to safeguard public safety and to allow engineering teams to undertake site assessment and clearance operations. Local commuters were advised to seek longer but safer detours immediately.
Authorities urged residents and travellers to avoid undertaking journeys through the Shillong–Dawki Road beyond Laitlyngkot village during the period of closure and to follow official advisories for further updates. No alternate route for the cut section has been announced by the district administration, and nearby communities faced disruption to mobility, access to services and the movement of goods. Local agencies coordinated to support vulnerable residents and to ensure delivery of essentials in affected areas now.
The district administration stated that the restrictions will remain in force until further notice and that restoration progress will determine the timing of any reopening. Teams from NHIDCL were mobilised to assess the slope, remove debris and stabilise the terrain while adhering to safety protocols. Authorities planned to provide periodic updates and to work with local bodies to restore safe passage as soon as feasible under close supervision. Safety of residents remained the top priority.
