A senior NHAI official said preparations for permanent repair have begun as a deposit work of the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority and NHAI headquarters has approved the works, directing that cured-in-place pipe works be undertaken by the authority with the state to bear the cost. The authority requested deposit citing public safety and protection of national highway infrastructure. A GMDA official said the proposal was under consideration and that the cost would be borne by GMDA.
Officials said recurring cave-ins have exposed deterioration in a 30-year-old sewer line laid by the Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran beneath the highway. The incidents began on December 24, 2023, and a second 12-foot sinkhole was recorded on July two, 2024, with three further incidents between 2024 and 2025 and a fifth on July two, 2025. The latest cave-in occurred on May five, 2026, and the sinkhole widened to nearly 20 feet two days later, causing cracks on the carriageway.
GMDA officials said the sewer runs about 20 feet below the Rs 20 bn highway and conveys sewage from sectors 45 to 51 to the sewage treatment plant in Behrampur. All six cave-ins have occurred on the same 22 km stretch between Subash Chowk and Sheeshpal Vihar near Raheja Mall. NHAI plans an inspection in the next couple of days and will decide whether the drain is operational before restoring the road within the next week.
