Phase I will allocate Rs 2 bn under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme to place power lines underground along five principal stretches of the city. The initial works have been identified for Paltan Bazar Square; AT Road from Paltan Bazar to Bharalumukh; MG Road from Bharalumukh to Padumphukhuri; GS Road from Paltan Bazar to GMCH Road including GMCH Road; and GS Road from Bhangagarh to the Dispur Secretariat. Officials have said the phased approach will allow coordination with other civic works and limit disruption to traffic and services.
The government also announced it will commission a feasibility study to consider integrating a metro rail system either on top of or alongside the ring road alignment. The proposed metro is intended to decongest central Guwahati and to shape planned urban expansion around satellite townships that are expected to develop along the corridor. Technical and financial assessments will determine alignment options, station locations and interface with existing transport networks.
The Guwahati Ring Road project envisages a 121-km corridor comprising a 55-km greenfield northern bypass, a 3-km six-lane bridge over the Brahmaputra and six-laning of NH-27 to improve regional connectivity. Planners indicated that the combined interventions in road and rail infrastructure are designed to enhance urban mobility and support economic growth in adjoining districts. The government did not set a detailed implementation timeline in the budget but said further project reports will follow.
