The first AI powered system will focus on dataset integration and the visualisation of proposed road corridors on a GIS platform so that logistics and routing options can be decided with greater clarity. The system is designed to ingest multiple municipal and agency datasets, reconcile overlaps and inconsistencies, and present corridor alternatives that planners can assess for feasibility and impact. By harmonising data layers the platform should speed up project appraisal and prioritisation across civic departments.
The second system will extract road information from plans approved by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority and the Directorate of Town and Country Planning, convert those records into GIS ready datasets and seed a digital road repository. The extraction process will standardise disparate plan formats, capture attributes such as carriageway widths and alignment and attach metadata to support future updates. Over time the repository is intended to become the definitive source of record for road infrastructure across the metropolitan area.
Officials said the initiative will improve near real time maintenance planning, emergency response routing and asset management by enabling interagency data sharing and validation workflows. Implementation will need to overcome legacy document quality issues and to establish governance for data accuracy and access. CUMTA envisages a phased rollout with collaboration from municipal corporations, planning bodies and utility agencies to ensure the repository remains current and reliable.
The move forms part of a broader push to use digital tools for urban management and to align transport planning with smart city objectives. If successful the project should reduce duplication of effort, provide clearer foundations for funding decisions and improve outcomes for road users across the region.
