The underpasses are proposed at Sanjeevi Nagar, Kollidam Y road and Maruti Nagar junctions, locations that have recorded over 50 traffic fatalities since 2021 amid heavy local traffic crossing faster highway streams. Each structure is designed as a six-lane facility to accommodate high vehicle volumes and to reduce conflict points between local and through traffic. Designs will include provisions for service roads to channel city-bound commuters away from mainline traffic.
Bids are scheduled to open in September 2026 with project completion targeted within 18 months of award, according to the notice. The allocation of Rs 1,216 mn for the three underpasses represents the planned investment in the immediate safety upgrade. Procurement documentation sets out technical and traffic management requirements to ensure minimal disruption during construction.
The initiative follows representations by the Trichy member of parliament to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and aligns with local demands for accident mitigation. Authorities indicated that a separate tender for an elevated rotary at G Corner junction is expected shortly. Implementation of the works will be overseen by the national highways authority with standard monitoring and compliance measures.
Officials expect the underpasses to reduce accidents and ease congestion by directing through-traffic towards Chennai and Madurai while keeping city traffic on service roads. The project timetable and award process will determine the pace of delivery but the scheme is intended to deliver visible safety benefits within the stated contract period. Continued coordination with local agencies will be necessary to manage traffic during the construction phase.
