The National Highways Authority of India has announced a breakthrough in the excavation of the three point six eight km long tunnel on the Bengaluru–Kadapa–Vijayawada Economic Corridor designated NH-544G. The tunnel is being constructed under Package nine between Porumamilla in YSR Kadapa district and Sitaramapuram in SPSR Nellore district. The project carries an estimated cost of Rs 10.92 billion (bn) and is likely to be completed by mid-2027. The breakthrough marks a major construction milestone for the corridor.

The tunnel will directly link the two portals, avoiding the existing circuitous route and reducing travel distance by around 17 km while significantly improving connectivity and transport facilities in the hilly and forested area. The corridor is expected to shorten the Bengaluru–Vijayawada route by 110 km and to save three to four hours of travel time. It will provide a direct connection between NH-44 and NH-16 and improve access to the Hindupur and Kopparthi industrial nodes. Project proponents anticipate both direct and indirect employment opportunities and safer, more comfortable journeys.

NHAI regional officer G. Hari Krishna, IES, inspected the tunnel works and indicated that upon completion the tunnel would rank among the key tunnel routes in south India and represent a significant addition to the region's road infrastructure. He commended Project Director Anilkumar Reddy, the concessionaire Max Infra and the project staff for achieving the excavation breakthrough expeditiously while adhering to safety precautions. He expressed confidence that the remaining tunnel and associated project works would be completed within the stipulated time with continued enthusiasm and commitment.

The Bengaluru–Kadapa–Vijayawada Economic Corridor is designed to enhance regional connectivity and economic integration by linking major national highways and industrial nodes. The tunnel breakthrough signals progress on NH-544G and underlines the role of sustained project management and contractor performance in delivering complex infrastructure in challenging terrain.
