Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara said the plan would cover every taluk and include two-tier and three-tier towns. He said roads in several district and taluk headquarters currently pass through the towns, creating the need for routes around the built-up areas.
The proposed network will cover the entire state, according to the decision announced after the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday. The government plans to establish impact zones measuring 1 to 2 km along the proposed roads, within which the construction of houses would not be permitted.
Parameshwara linked the decision to Karnataka’s level of urbanisation, which he put at 46 per cent. He said the state needed to create suitable conditions around the planned roads as towns expanded and more areas became urbanised.
He also referred to a similar arrangement in Hyderabad, where a 1-km zone has been maintained without residential construction and trees have been grown. The Karnataka government’s proposed impact zones are intended to help preserve such areas alongside the new ring roads, although the report did not provide details on land acquisition, timelines or the implementation mechanism.
