State Minister for Roads and Buildings B C Janardhan Reddy directed department officials to remain on high alert after reviewing the situation. The damage was assessed as of 7 a.m. on Thursday across Srikakulam, Parvathipuram-Manyam, Vizianagaram, Alluri Sitarama Raju, Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli, Kakinada, East Godavari, Ambedkar Konaseema, West Godavari, Anantapur, Kurnool and Nandyal districts.
Roads were washed away at four locations after deep craters formed. Cross-drainage works were damaged at 78 locations, with restoration completed at 37 sites, while fallen trees at 11 locations were fully cleared to support the movement of vehicles.
Rain-related traffic disruption was reported at 23 locations, and congestion had been cleared at 14 spots. The state government estimates that temporary repairs will require Rs. 269.5 mn, while permanent restoration of the damaged roads is expected to cost Rs. 2.25 bn.
The Roads and Buildings Department has established 78 control rooms and appointed nodal officers across the state. It has also identified 614 vulnerable or accident-prone locations and arranged 550 JCB machines and 596 power saws to remove fallen trees, landslides and other obstructions. The department is conducting 36 joint coordination meetings with agencies linked to its operations and has introduced toll-free services in major corporations for round-the-clock assistance. Personnel and equipment have been kept ready for emergency relief and restoration work as assessments continue.
