The Arunachal Pradesh government has completed 62 of the 67 roads and bridges sanctioned under Phase I of its Chief Minister’s Comprehensive State Road Development Plan (CMCSRDP), with the remaining five projects scheduled for completion by March 2027. The state-funded initiative is intended to improve connectivity to remote and last-mile areas.

Phase I covered the 2019-24 period and involved an investment of Rs. 9 bn. Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced the progress in a post on X, according to the information released by the state government. The completed projects form part of the government’s efforts to strengthen road access across Arunachal Pradesh.

The government has earmarked Rs. 23.34 bn for Phase II, which will run from 2026 to 2029. A further Rs. 20 bn has been planned to provide all-weather road connectivity to villages that remain outside the coverage of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).

The second phase will focus on improving and upgrading links to district headquarters, township roads and roads serving District Commissioner, Additional District Commissioner and Sub-Divisional Officer administrative circles. The programme is expected to extend road infrastructure beyond the projects completed during the first phase.

A key priority will be the improvement, widening and decongestion of roads within the Itanagar Capital Complex, where rising traffic pressure has increased the need for upgraded urban connectivity. The plan also includes construction and upgradation of old critical bridges, alongside continued development of township road networks.

The state’s road programme is designed to address connectivity gaps through a combination of new construction, widening and repairs. Its focus on administrative centres, urban roads, uncovered villages and bridge infrastructure is intended to support movement across the state, particularly in areas where terrain and distance have constrained access. Completion of the remaining Phase I projects and implementation of Phase II will determine the pace of the planned expansion.
