Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday inaugurated four road infrastructure projects in New Delhi with a combined value of Rs. 19.41 bn, including the long-delayed Barapullah Phase 3 elevated corridor. The projects were launched at a function in Barapullah attended by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, members of her cabinet and Union Minister of State for Road Transport Harsh Malhotra.

Gupta said the projects reflected cooperation between the Central and Delhi governments, and linked their completion to what she described as a double-engine administration. She added that her government was preparing several initiatives to address traffic congestion in the capital, which she said had been neglected for five decades.

Delhi Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Verma said the Barapullah flyover had ended an 11-year wait. The project had been promised for completion within a year, and Verma said its delivery followed 18 months of government work without political disputes or excuses.

The Barapullah Phase 3 elevated road corridor is the largest of the four projects. It is designed to provide signal-free connectivity between east and south Delhi by linking Mayur Vihar Phase 1 with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, or AIIMS, and will merge with the existing Barapullah flyover at Sarai Kale Khan.

The completed corridor will form a stretch of around 10 km. It was approved in 2014 and work began in 2015, with completion originally scheduled for 2017, but repeated delays led to significant cost increases and took the revised project cost to about Rs. 16.35 bn.

The remaining projects comprise two new flyovers in south Delhi and an underpass on the Outer Ring Road in north Delhi. The structures are intended to ease traffic congestion and improve movement across key routes in the capital. Their inauguration brings four road projects into operation as authorities continue to expand and upgrade Delhi’s urban transport infrastructure.
