The Centre has approved Rs. 5.09 bn for strengthening and selective widening of National Highway 14 and National Highway 114 in Birbhum district of West Bengal. Union Road Transport and Highways minister Nitin Gadkari announced the approval in a social media post.

The project includes a 91.90-km stretch of NH-14 between Bhimgarh and Nalhati via Mallarpur. It will also cover a 56.40-km section of NH-114 between Surul Village and Mallarpur. Together, the two identified stretches extend for 148.30 km.

The planned works are intended to improve connectivity across the district and support safer movement along the highway corridors. The road upgrades are expected to ease congestion, reduce travel time and improve the movement of passengers, freight and other goods.

The project is also aimed at strengthening links between villages, towns and key economic centres in the region. The Centre said the improved corridors would support regional trade, local businesses and wider economic activity while making journeys more efficient for commuters and freight operators.

The approval forms part of broader road infrastructure activity in West Bengal. Gadkari had also announced the approval of Rs. 11.76 bn for constructing a six-lane bridge over the Teesta River at Sevoke in Darjeeling district. The bridge project is separate from the Birbhum highway works and is intended to improve regional connectivity in north Bengal.

The Birbhum works will focus on strengthening existing highway infrastructure and selectively widening sections where required. The two routes connect several settlements and commercial areas, with the upgrades expected to improve the reliability and safety of travel for local residents and transport operators.
