Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh met Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi on October 8 and sought an early start to the proposed Shangshak-Tengnoupal Highway project. He also requested the Centre’s approval for an elevated highway in Imphal to improve traffic movement and ease congestion in the state capital.

During the meeting, Khemchand raised several road connectivity issues affecting Manipur and urged the Union ministry to expedite work on important highway projects. The proposed elevated road is intended to provide an additional route through Imphal and improve the movement of vehicles in areas facing persistent congestion.

The Chief Minister also asked Gadkari to ensure the completion of ongoing works on National Highway 37 and National Highway 2 during the current working season. He highlighted the importance of completing the projects on time for improving connectivity between key locations and reducing travel difficulties for residents and other road users.

Gadkari informed Khemchand that the proposed elevated highway in Imphal was under active consideration by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. He further assured the Chief Minister that the issues and projects raised by the state government would be addressed and that the ministry would provide all possible assistance for improving road connectivity.

The projects are significant for Manipur, where road links serve as important routes for movement between the state capital, other districts and neighbouring areas. Improved highway infrastructure is also expected to support access to markets, public services and economic activity, while reducing pressure on existing roads in urban and inter-district corridors.

The meeting took place a day after Khemchand met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi and briefed him on the state government’s efforts to restore peace and normalcy. Shah has accepted the Chief Minister’s invitation to visit Manipur this month, according to the report.
