The Centre has approved Rs. 9.94 bn for the development of National Highway 10 in Sikkim, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced on 8 October. The project covers the stretch between Rangpo and Ranipool, a strategically important corridor that serves as a major road link to the state.

The highway will be developed as a two-lane route designed to withstand the difficult conditions of the Himalayan terrain. The planned works are intended to improve the reliability of the corridor and support safer movement between the two locations.

According to the announcement, the project will include the construction of tunnels, viaducts, bridges and cut-and-cover sections. These structures will be supported by extensive engineering measures designed for the terrain and the route’s identified vulnerabilities.

Slope-protection works will also be carried out along sections affected by sliding and sinking risks. The measures are expected to improve safety and strengthen the road’s resilience for commuters, residents and travellers using the corridor.

The development is expected to enhance connectivity across Sikkim and provide a more dependable transport link for communities along the route. It is also intended to strengthen the state’s road infrastructure by addressing the engineering challenges associated with National Highway 10.
