Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis virtually inaugurated three new flyovers in Mumbai on October 22, with the projects intended to improve connectivity and ease traffic congestion across important parts of the city. The infrastructure opened for public use includes railway overbridges at Sion and Vidyavihar, along with a flyover on the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road.

The projects are designed to improve north-south and east-west movement through the city, reduce travel time and ease congestion at key junctions. The chief minister said the new infrastructure would support the broader objective of reducing travel time across Mumbai to between 50 and 60 minutes, an aim linked to improving daily travel for residents and commuters.

The reconstructed Sion railway overbridge replaces a 112-year-old British-era structure that was demolished after being declared unsafe in 2019. Its replacement is expected to facilitate the planned construction of the fifth and sixth railway lines between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Kurla under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project.

The new bridge is therefore connected not only with road traffic improvements but also with the planned expansion of railway infrastructure on the route. The Vidyavihar bridge is expected to shorten the journey between the eastern and western parts of Mumbai from 30 minutes to 10 minutes. Together with the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road flyover, the three projects are intended to provide smoother movement across major east-west and north-south corridors and reduce pressure at busy junctions. The inauguration marks the completion of infrastructure works aimed at addressing recurring congestion and improving links between key parts of the metropolitan area.
