The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has intensified dust-control measures across national highways and expressways in Delhi-NCR ahead of the winter season. The initiative is aimed at strengthening air pollution control through increased deployment of sprinkling, sweeping and dust-suppression equipment on road stretches in the region.

NHAI has deployed around 60 water sprinklers and tankers, 14 anti-smog guns, 23 mechanical road-sweeping machines, two tractor-mounted broomers and more than 900 workers for dust-mitigation activities. The equipment and personnel are being used to support regular cleaning, water sprinkling and other measures intended to limit dust accumulation along highway corridors.

A further 13 mechanical road-sweeping machines are operating across 157 km of national highway stretches within Delhi-NCR. The additional deployment is part of the authority’s preparations for the winter period, when pollution-control measures are subject to closer monitoring and strengthened implementation.

NHAI Member (Technical) Alok Deepankar reviewed the arrangements and directed field teams to ensure the full deployment of equipment, manpower and water sprinkling resources. He also instructed teams to operate anti-smog guns regularly and maintain daily mechanical sweeping across the identified road stretches.

The review also stressed compliance with norms established by the Commission for Air Quality Management in Delhi-NCR. These requirements include covering construction materials, maintaining dust-free road surfaces and intensifying measures in line with applicable stages of the Graded Response Action Plan. Separately, NHAI said it planted around 980,000 plants in NCR during FY25-26, exceeding its target of 952,000 plants, with survival rates of more than 90 per cent.
